Frequently asked questions
How is weighted GPA calculated?
Start from the standard grade points, then add a bonus for difficulty: +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB. Multiply by credits, sum, and divide by total credits. An A in an AP class is worth 5.0.
What is the highest weighted GPA?
On a common 5.0-weighted scale, straight A’s in all AP/IB courses give a 5.0. Some schools cap or scale differently, so check your school’s policy.
Why is my weighted GPA above 4.0?
Because Honors and AP/IB classes add bonus points above the 4.0 cap. That is the point of weighting — it rewards taking harder courses.
