Worked example: raise a 2.8 GPA to 3.0

Suppose your transcript shows a 2.80 GPA across 45 GPA-bearing semester credits. You plan to take another 15 graded credits and want a 3.00 cumulative GPA.

  1. Current quality points: 2.80 × 45 = 126.
  2. Points needed after the semester: 3.00 × (45 + 15) = 180.
  3. Required semester GPA: (180 − 126) ÷ 15 = 3.60.

On a scale where A = 4 and B = 3, three A grades and two B grades in five equal three-credit courses produce that 3.60 average. With a 4.00 semester, your highest possible cumulative GPA would be (126 + 60) ÷ 60 = 3.10. A 3.20 target is therefore out of reach in those 15 credits under these assumptions.

Which credits should you enter?

Use credits included in your institution’s GPA, which may differ from credits earned toward graduation. Pass/fail classes, transfer work and repeated courses can receive different treatment. Keep all inputs in the same unit: semester credits throughout, or quarter credits throughout. This planner assumes new graded credits are added; it does not apply a school’s grade-replacement policy.

If your transcript lists exact quality points, use those to check the result: a displayed GPA rounded to two decimals can produce a small difference. Confirm scholarship, major and graduation thresholds with your school; they may use a different GPA.

Frequently asked questions

How do I figure out the GPA I need to reach my goal?

Required GPA = (target × total credits − current GPA × completed credits) ÷ remaining credits. Enter your current GPA, credits done, target and credits remaining, and the planner solves it for you.

What if my target GPA is impossible?

The planner flags it and shows the best GPA you can still reach. You may need more credits or a slightly lower target.

Can I raise my GPA in one semester?

It depends how many credits you’ve already completed. The fewer credits behind you, the faster your GPA can move. The planner shows the exact average you need.
