CGPA to percentage and US GPA
Percentages use the CBSE ×9.5 formula. US GPA uses the banded mapping credential evaluators such as WES apply — it is not a straight ÷2.5.

Which CGPA-to-percentage formula should I use?
Use the formula your university specifies on its transcript or website. The CBSE ×9.5 rule is the most widely used for schools and many universities. Anna University, VTU, GTU and Mumbai University publish their own formulas — switch the “University formula” dropdown above to match yours.
One CGPA gives noticeably different percentages under each rule. An 8.0 CGPA is 76% under CBSE, 80% under Anna University, 72.5% under VTU, 75% under GTU and 67.8% under the Mumbai University formula.
MAKAUT, SPPU and other universities
MAKAUT and SPPU (Savitribai Phule Pune University) are commonly converted with the same (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 rule as VTU, so you can use the VTU option for an estimate. SPPU has also issued a banded conversion that applies a different equation to each grade range, and for Mumbai University some faculties use 7.25 instead of 7.1. Because these rules differ by faculty and year, the conversion printed on your grade card — or a conversion certificate from your university — is the figure to quote.
Converting Indian CGPA for study abroad
For US graduate applications, a 10-point CGPA is often mapped to the 4.0 scale, where roughly 9.0+ ≈ 4.0 and 8.0 ≈ 3.3. These are approximations — universities and evaluators such as WES may use their own course-by-course method, which is authoritative for admissions.

CBSE called the result an indicative percentage, not a reconstruction of the marks actually scored. The 9.5 comes from the A1 band (91–100) being anchored to grade point 10, where the five-year average of real marks in that band was 95. Note the scope: the CGPA-on-the-marksheet regime ran under the CCE scheme and was discontinued after 2017–18, so a more recent CBSE Class 10 marksheet already carries a percentage and needs no conversion. University formulas (Anna, VTU, Mumbai) are each set by that university, not by CBSE.
