GPA to percentage reference table
Two methods are in common use, and they disagree. The linear ×25 method is the quick convention; the letter-band method reflects what a GPA actually represents on a US transcript. Most US schools grade to the bands.
| GPA | Linear (×25) | Letter band | Actual % range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.0 | 100% | A | 93–100% |
| 3.7 | 92.5% | A− | 90–92% |
| 3.3 | 82.5% | B+ | 87–89% |
| 3.0 | 75% | B | 83–86% |
| 2.7 | 67.5% | B− | 80–82% |
| 2.0 | 50% | C | 73–76% |
The gap matters: a 3.0 is a B, and a B is 83–86% on a US transcript — not the 75% the linear formula returns. Use the linear method only when an application form explicitly asks for it.
Converting a GPA outside the US
Neither method above applies abroad, because the underlying grading scales differ:
- Canada — a 4.0 is 85–100%, since both A and A+ are worth 4.0.
- UK — a First-Class degree starts at 70%, so UK marks never map linearly.
- India — percentages come from a 10-point CGPA, usually via the ×9.5 formula.
- Australia — a High Distinction is 85%+.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert GPA to percentage?
The simplest method is Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100, equivalently GPA × 25. So a 3.5 GPA ≈ 87.5%. Always confirm with your institution, as exact mappings vary.
What is a 3.0 GPA in percentage?
About 75% using the (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100 method (3.0 × 25 = 75%).
Is there one official GPA-to-percentage formula?
No. Schools use different scales, so any conversion is approximate. For official applications, use a credential evaluator like WES.
