CGPA full form and meaning
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It summarizes performance across all completed semesters rather than measuring only one term. Colleges commonly report it on a 10-point scale, although the exact scale and conversion rules depend on the institution.
The 10-point grade scale

This is the letter-to-point scheme in the UGC’s Choice Based Credit System guidelines, which most Indian universities follow. The marks behind each letter, and sometimes the letters themselves, are set by each university, so check your grade card.
Worked example: SGPA for one semester

SGPA = 135 ÷ 16 = 8.44.
From SGPA to CGPA
CGPA weights each semester by its credits:
- Semester 1: SGPA 8.44 × 16 credits = 135.04
- Semester 2: SGPA 7.90 × 20 credits = 158.00
- Semester 3: SGPA 8.80 × 18 credits = 158.40
CGPA = 451.44 ÷ 54 = 8.36.
A plain average of the three SGPAs gives 8.38. The gap comes from semester 2: it carried the most credits and the lowest SGPA, so it pulls the true CGPA down further. Some universities compute CGPA directly from every subject’s credit points instead of from rounded SGPAs, which can change the second decimal. The CGPA calculator does the weighting for you.
Converting CGPA to a percentage
There is no single national formula. Use the one printed on your grade card or published by your university. For the 8.36 CGPA above:

CGPA for applications abroad
Credential evaluators such as WES convert course by course rather than dividing your CGPA by 2.5, so an 8.0 CGPA typically lands near a 3.3 US GPA rather than 3.2. The GPA vs CGPA guide explains the difference.
