Worked example

You currently have 85%, you want 90%, and the final is worth 30% (w = 0.30):

(90 − 0.70 × 85) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7%

That’s above 100%, so 90% isn’t reachable — the best you could finish with is about 89.5%. Lower the target slightly and the needed score becomes achievable.

Frequently asked questions

What grade do I need on my final?

Required final = (target − (1 − w) × current) ÷ w, where w is the final’s weight as a fraction. Enter your current grade, target grade and the final’s weight to get the answer instantly.

What if the score I need is over 100%?

Then your target isn’t reachable from the final alone. The calculator tells you the best grade you can still finish with.

How much will my final affect my grade?

It depends on its weight. A 30%-weight final can move your course grade by up to 30 points. The calculator shows your best- and worst-case final grades.
