Frequently asked questions
What is an unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA measures grades on a flat 0–4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. An A is always 4.0, whether the class is regular, Honors or AP.
How is unweighted GPA calculated?
Multiply each course’s grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, …) by its credits, sum the results, and divide by total credits. Nothing is added for class difficulty.
Do colleges prefer weighted or unweighted GPA?
Many colleges recalculate an unweighted GPA so all applicants are compared on the same scale, then consider course rigor separately. Both numbers matter.
