Common GPA Calculation Mistakes

3 min read · Updated 2026-06-15

Forgetting credit hours

Averaging grade points without weighting by credits gives the wrong GPA. A 4-credit course must count more than a 1-credit course.

Mixing scales

Don’t average a 10-point CGPA subject with a 4.0 GPA course. Convert first using the conversion tools.

Pass/fail and withdrawals

Pass/No-Pass and Withdrawn courses usually carry no grade points and should be left out of the average. Our calculators ignore blank grades automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Do pass/fail courses count toward GPA?

Usually no — pass/fail (P/NP) courses typically don’t carry grade points and are excluded from the GPA.

Why is my hand-calculated GPA different?

The most common reason is not weighting by credit hours. Use the GPA calculator to weight automatically.
