Conversion formulas
- IPS vs IPK: IPS (Indeks Prestasi Semester) is one semester; IPK (Indeks Prestasi Kumulatif) is the cumulative figure across all semesters.
- IPK: IPK = Σ(nilai × SKS) ÷ Σ(SKS) — credit-weighted by SKS, the same structure as a US GPA.
Cum Laude needs more than the number
An IPK of 3.51 is the headline threshold for Dengan Pujian, but most universities attach conditions: no D or E grades anywhere on your transcript, and completion within the normal study period. A student who repeats a year or carries a single E can miss Cum Laude with an IPK well above 3.51, so check your own faculty’s rules rather than the number alone.
Why your IPK barely needs converting
Indonesia and the United States both grade on a 0–4.00 scale with A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and C = 2.0, so an IPK of 3.4 reads as a 3.4 in the US. That puts Indonesian applicants in an easier position than those from 10-point or percentage systems, where the conversion itself introduces uncertainty.
The caveat is distribution rather than arithmetic: grading standards differ between Indonesian universities and between faculties, so admissions readers weigh the institution and programme alongside the number.
Using an Indonesian transcript abroad
For US graduate applications, a credential evaluator such as WES recalculates your IPK course by course from your transkrip nilai, and that figure is the one admissions acts on. Have both your transcript and your ijazah ready, and be prepared for the evaluator to ask for documents issued directly by your university.
