The HEC conversion formula

Universities regulated by the Higher Education Commission generally convert with Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100, which is the same as multiplying by 25. It is a straight linear relation, not a set of letter-grade bands — which is why a Pakistani conversion looks different from a Canadian or American one, where an 80% and an 84% can share a grade point.

There is no single conversion that every Pakistani university accepts. Some publish their own table, and a few use a stepped mapping instead. If a scholarship or admissions form asks for a percentage, use your university’s published figure where one exists.

What counts as a good CGPA in Pakistan

A CGPA of 3.0 or above is a First Division and clears the bar for most postgraduate admissions and scholarships. 3.5+ typically earns Distinction or a place on the Dean’s List, and is the level competitive applicants aim for when applying abroad. Below 2.0 usually puts a student on academic probation.

Applying abroad with a Pakistani CGPA

Because Pakistan already grades on a 4.0 scale, your CGPA maps to the US scale nearly one-for-one — a 3.4 in Lahore reads as a 3.4 in the US. That is a real advantage over 10-point or percentage systems, which need interpretation. Evaluators such as WES will still recalculate course by course, and for UK applications your CGPA will be read against honours classifications rather than a GPA.

Where these figures come from

We have not yet traced this country’s band mapping to a single body that publishes it. The table reflects the scales used by the institutions we checked, and grading practice varies between them — so treat it as an orientation rather than an authority, and confirm the boundaries with the institution that issued the transcript. If you know the official source, tell us and we will cite it.

Conversions are approximate by nature. For official admissions, use a NACES credential evaluator such as WES and confirm with your institution.

Pakistan conversion FAQ

How do I convert CGPA to percentage in Pakistan?

Multiply your CGPA by 25. For example, 3.4 × 25 = 85%. This is the HEC relation used by most Pakistani universities.

What is 3.5 CGPA in percentage?

A 3.5 CGPA is 87.5% using the HEC ×25 formula, and is usually classed as a Distinction.

What is 3.0 CGPA in percentage?

A 3.0 CGPA is 75%, which is a First Division.

Is 3.0 CGPA good in Pakistan?

Yes — a 3.0 is a First Division and meets the minimum for most postgraduate programmes and scholarships. Competitive applicants to universities abroad generally have 3.5 or higher.

Is a Pakistani CGPA the same as a US GPA?

Very nearly. Both use a 4.0 scale, so the number transfers with little adjustment — unlike a 10-point Indian CGPA or a percentage-based transcript. Credential evaluators will still recalculate it from your individual course grades.

What CGPA is needed for a First Division?

A CGPA of 3.0 (75%) or above is normally a First Division; 2.0–2.99 is a Second Division.
