Bangladesh GPA to Percentage Converter

Convert an SSC or HSC GPA on the 5.00 scale to a percentage and a US GPA — and see why your university CGPA uses a different scale.

SSC / HSC GPA (out of 5) to US GPA

US GPA (4.0 scale)
3.5

A · 70-79%

This is the SSC/HSC 5.00 scale. Bangladeshi universities grade on 4.00 instead — check which one your transcript uses.

Conversions are approximate. For official applications, use a NACES evaluator such as WES.

SSC and HSC grading (5.00 scale)

This is the scale on your SSC and HSC marksheet. If your document says “out of 4.00”, it is a university transcript and the table below the next heading applies instead.

Conversion formulas

  • SSC/HSC GPA to percentage: Percentage ≈ (GPA ÷ 5.00) × 100. A GPA of 4.00 is about 80%. This is an approximation — the letter bands above are what the marksheet is actually based on.
  • University CGPA: CGPA = Σ(grade point × credit) ÷ Σ(credit) on a 4.00 scale, where A+ = 4.00 for 80–100%.

Two scales, and which one your document uses

This is the single most common confusion on a Bangladeshi transcript. SSC and HSC results from the education boards are reported as a GPA out of 5.00, which is why “GPA 5” is shorthand for a perfect school result. Universities — public and private — grade on a CGPA out of 4.00, the same range as the US scale.

A GPA of 4.00 therefore means two completely different things depending on the document: a good-but-not-top HSC result (roughly 70–79%), or a perfect university CGPA. Always state which scale you are quoting on an application.

University grading and First Class

On the university 4.00 scale, A+ is 80–100% and worth 4.00, A is 75–79% worth 3.75, and the scale steps down in quarter points at most institutions. A CGPA of 3.00 or above is generally treated as a First Class degree. Because the scale matches the US one, a Bangladeshi CGPA transfers abroad with little adjustment — unlike the SSC/HSC GPA, which has to be converted.

Using a Bangladeshi transcript abroad

For US applications, a credential evaluator such as WES will assess your certificates and transcripts and produce the figure admissions offices use. Bangladeshi applicants are usually asked for board-issued SSC and HSC certificates as well as university transcripts, and documents commonly need to be verified through the relevant education board or the University Grants Commission.

Where these figures come from

We have not yet traced this country’s band mapping to a single body that publishes it. The table reflects the scales used by the institutions we checked, and grading practice varies between them — so treat it as an orientation rather than an authority, and confirm the boundaries with the institution that issued the transcript. If you know the official source, tell us and we will cite it.

Conversions are approximate by nature. For official admissions, use a NACES credential evaluator such as WES and confirm with your institution.

Bangladesh conversion FAQ

What is GPA 5 in percentage in Bangladesh?

A GPA of 5.00 is an A+, which covers 80–100% on the SSC and HSC scale. It is the highest possible school result.

What is GPA 4 in percentage?

On the SSC/HSC 5.00 scale, a GPA of 4.00 is an A — roughly 70–79%. On a university 4.00 CGPA it would instead be a perfect A+ result, so check which scale your document uses.

Is GPA out of 5 or 4 in Bangladesh?

Both. SSC and HSC use 5.00; universities use 4.00. This is the most common source of confusion on Bangladeshi applications.

What CGPA is First Class in Bangladesh?

A CGPA of 3.00 or above on the university 4.00 scale is generally treated as First Class.

How do I convert GPA to percentage in Bangladesh?

For SSC/HSC, the approximation is (GPA ÷ 5.00) × 100, so a 4.50 is about 90%. The letter bands are more accurate: a 4.50 sits in the A band, 70–79%.

Is 4.50 a good GPA in HSC?

Yes — 4.50 is a strong HSC result in the A band and is competitive for admission to most Bangladeshi universities, though the top public universities and medical colleges expect closer to GPA 5.00.
