What trips U of A students up

  • A+ is worth 4.0, exactly the same as an A. Calculators that assume 4.33 for Alberta schools will overstate a U of A GPA.
  • There is no D-. D at 1.0 is the lowest passing grade on the undergraduate scale.
  • The letter system with four-point equivalents has been in place since September 2003, replacing the earlier nine-point stanine scale — older transcripts may show the previous system.
  • The graduate scale differs: it groups C through F together as failure, while the undergraduate scale treats D as a minimal pass.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated at University of Alberta?

U of A multiplies each course's grade points by its credit hours, adds those up, and divides by total credit hours. What differs from the generic 4.0 scale is the point values themselves — U of A uses A+ = 4.00, A = 4.00, A- = 3.70, B+ = 3.30, and so on.

Does U of A give A+ grades?

Yes, but it carries the same 4 grade points as a straight A. A+ is recognition on the transcript rather than extra grade points, so it cannot lift your GPA above 4.

Does U of A have D- grades?

No. U of A's scale has no D-. That matters because the gap between the grades either side is wider than on a standard scale, so slipping one grade band costs more grade points.

Is this the official U of A GPA?

This calculator uses U of A's published grade-point values, but your official GPA is whatever the registrar records. Repeated courses, transfer credit, pass/fail marks and withdrawals are handled by school-specific policy and are not modelled here — always confirm against your transcript.
