Converting a York GPA for applications abroad

York does not publish an official 9-point to 4.0 conversion. Graduate schools and credential evaluators such as WES convert York transcripts course by course, so avoid quoting a self-calculated 4.0 figure as though it were official — give the 9-point average and state the scale.

What trips York students up

  • The scale runs 0–9, not 0–4. A 7.0 at York is a B+ average, which is a good result rather than a poor one.
  • There are no minus grades. The scale steps straight from A (8) to B+ (7), so there is no A- or B- to land on.
  • E and F are both failing grades, but E still carries 1 grade point while F carries 0. A course failed with an E therefore damages your average less than one failed with an F.
  • York’s bands are wider than most of Ontario: an A is 80–89% here, while U of T and McMaster would call 80–84% an A-. The same percentage produces a different letter at each school.
  • Only courses taken at York count toward a York GPA, and averages are credit-weighted.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated at York University?

York multiplies each course's grade points by its credit hours, adds those up, and divides by total credit hours. What differs from the generic 4.0 scale is the point values themselves — York uses A+ = 9.00, A = 8.00, B+ = 7.00, B = 6.00, and so on.

Does York give A+ grades?

Yes, and it is worth more than a straight A — A+ carries 9 grade points at York against 8 for an A. The scale tops out at 9.

Does York have C-, D- grades?

No. York's scale has no C-, D-. That matters because the gap between the grades either side is wider than on a standard scale, so slipping one grade band costs more grade points.

Is this the official York GPA?

This calculator uses York's published grade-point values, but your official GPA is whatever the registrar records. Repeated courses, transfer credit, pass/fail marks and withdrawals are handled by school-specific policy and are not modelled here — always confirm against your transcript.
