WAM Calculator
Enter each unit’s mark out of 100 and its credit points to get your weighted average mark (WAM) and the grade band it sits in.
| Course | Credit points | Mark (%) | |
|---|---|---|---|
Worked example
| Unit | Credit points | Mark | Mark × credit points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit A | 6 | 78 | 468 |
| Unit B | 6 | 85 | 510 |
| Unit C | 12 | 70 | 840 |
| Unit D | 6 | 64 | 384 |
| Total | 30 | 2,202 |
WAM = 2,202 ÷ 30 = 73.4, a Credit average. A plain average of the four marks is 74.3; the WAM is lower because the 12-credit-point unit, with its 70, counts twice as much as each of the others.
Monash WAM: first-year units count half
Monash weights each unit by its credit points and by its year level: units designated first-year carry a weighting of 0.5 wherever you take them in your course, every other unit carries 1.0, and failed and repeated units are included. To match a Monash WAM here, enter half the credit points for each first-year unit. The rules are on Monash’s WAM page.
Other universities set their own rules on which units count, how fails and repeats are treated, and whether year levels are weighted for honours. Check your faculty’s handbook before relying on a figure for an application.
WAM vs GPA
Many Australian universities report a GPA alongside the WAM, often on a 7-point scale where an HD is 7, a Distinction 6, a Credit 5 and a Pass 4. GPA flattens every mark inside a band to the same number; WAM keeps the difference between a 75 and an 84. To express your marks as a US 4.0 GPA, use the Australia grade conversion.
Frequently asked questions
What is WAM?
WAM (weighted average mark) is the average of your unit marks out of 100, weighted by each unit’s credit points. Australian universities use it for honours entry, scholarships, prizes and graduate admission.
How is WAM calculated?
Multiply each unit’s mark by its credit points, add those up, and divide by the total credit points: WAM = Σ(mark × credit points) ÷ Σ(credit points).
What is the difference between WAM and GPA?
WAM averages raw marks out of 100; GPA averages grade points, often on a 7-point scale. Two Distinctions score the same in GPA whether they are a 75 or an 84, but they are nine points apart in WAM.
Do failed units count in WAM?
At many universities, yes. Monash, for example, includes failed and repeated units in its WAM. Check your own university’s rules.
How do I calculate my Monash WAM?
Monash gives first-year units half weight. Enter half the credit points for each first-year unit — a 6-credit-point first-year unit goes in as 3 — and full credit points for every other unit.
