Division equivalents
Older Nepali transcripts and many university programmes report a Division rather than a GPA. These are the aggregate percentage bands.
| Division | Percentage | Approx. GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Distinction | 80% and above | 3.6 – 4.0 |
| First Division | 60 – 79% | 2.8 – 3.5 |
| Second Division | 45 – 59% | 2.2 – 2.7 |
| Third Division | 32 – 44% | 1.6 – 2.1 |
Two conversions that give different answers
Nepal has an official NEB letter scale and a widely used shortcut, and they do not agree. The NEB bands above are what your grade sheet is based on: an A is 80–89%, so a 3.6 GPA covers a ten-point range. The shortcut Percentage = GPA × 25 turns that same 3.6 into exactly 90%.
Use the bands when you are reading a grade sheet, and the ×25 figure only when a form explicitly asks you to compute a percentage from a GPA. Quoting 90% for a 3.6 on an application where the transcript says “A, 80–89%” invites an awkward question.
SEE, Grade 12 and university grading
The SEE at the end of Grade 10 and the Grade 12 examinations both report a GPA on the 4.0 scale. Universities differ: Tribhuvan University has historically used percentages and Divisions, while Kathmandu University and Pokhara University grade on a 4.0 GPA closer to the US model. Check which one your transcript uses before converting anything.
Using a Nepali transcript abroad
Because the NEB scale already runs 0–4.0, a Nepali GPA looks familiar to US admissions readers — but the percentage bands underneath are much wider than American ones, where an A starts at 93%. A credential evaluator such as WES will recalculate from your individual subject marks, and that figure is the one admissions offices use.
Where these figures come from
We have not yet traced this country’s band mapping to a single body that publishes it. The table reflects the scales used by the institutions we checked, and grading practice varies between them — so treat it as an orientation rather than an authority, and confirm the boundaries with the institution that issued the transcript. If you know the official source, tell us and we will cite it.
Conversions are approximate by nature. For official admissions, use a NACES credential evaluator such as WES and confirm with your institution.
