Why dividing by 2.5 understates a Vietnamese transcript

The obvious conversion is to scale 10 down to 4 — an 8.0 becoming a 3.2. Vietnam’s own Ministry of Education does not do this. Under Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT an 8.0 is a B, and a B is worth 3.0. More importantly, the two scales are not used the same way: a 10 is almost never awarded in Vietnam, and a 7.5 already places a student in roughly the top 10–15% of the cohort, whereas a 4.0 GPA is far more common in the US.

This is why US admissions offices are advised to weigh class rank and context alongside any converted number, and why quoting the official band mapping is better than quoting arithmetic.

Degree classifications

Vietnamese degrees are classified from the cumulative average: Xuất sắc (outstanding), Giỏi (excellent), Khá (good), Trung bình (average). The exact cut-offs vary between universities and between the 10-point and 4-point reporting used by each institution. Many universities now report both a 10-point and a 4-point GPA on the transcript — if yours does, use the 4-point figure for overseas applications and keep the 10-point one as supporting evidence.

Using a Vietnamese transcript abroad

For US graduate applications, a credential evaluator such as WES recalculates from your individual subject scores. Vietnamese transcripts are usually issued in Vietnamese and will need certified translation. Because the grading distribution is compressed, it is worth asking your university for a statement of class rank or cohort percentile where one is available — it carries more weight than a converted GPA.

Where these figures come from

We have not yet traced this country’s band mapping to a single body that publishes it. The table reflects the scales used by the institutions we checked, and grading practice varies between them — so treat it as an orientation rather than an authority, and confirm the boundaries with the institution that issued the transcript. If you know the official source, tell us and we will cite it.

Conversions are approximate by nature. For official admissions, use a NACES credential evaluator such as WES and confirm with your institution.

Vietnam conversion FAQ

How do I convert a Vietnamese GPA to the 4.0 scale?

Use the official bands: 8.5–10.0 = 4.0, 7.0–8.4 = 3.0, 5.5–6.9 = 2.0, 4.0–5.4 = 1.0, below 4.0 = 0. This is Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT, not a division.

What is 8.0 in GPA?

An 8.0 on the Vietnamese 10-point scale is a B, worth 3.0 under the official mapping — not the 3.2 that dividing by 2.5 suggests.

Is a 7.5 GPA good in Vietnam?

Yes, genuinely. A 7.5 is a solid Khá (good) and places a student around the top 10–15% of the cohort. Vietnamese marking is far stricter than the number suggests to an outside reader.

What score is Giỏi in Vietnam?

Giỏi (excellent) generally starts at 8.0–8.5 depending on the university, and corresponds to an A band under the official classification.

Does anyone get a 10 in Vietnam?

Very rarely. A 10 is close to a theoretical maximum rather than a realistic target, which is a large part of why direct scaling to a US 4.0 misrepresents Vietnamese transcripts.

What is 6.5 in US GPA?

A 6.5 falls in the C band (5.5–6.9), worth about a 2.0 US GPA.
