McMaster grades on a US 4.0 scale

Graduate schools and credential evaluators outside Canada work in 4.0 terms. This is McMaster's own published mapping — use it rather than dividing your 12-point average, which produces a different and unofficial number.

What trips McMaster students up

  • The scale runs 0–12, not 0–4. A 12.0 is a perfect average and anything above roughly 9.5 is an A- or better.
  • Every letter has its own point value with no gaps, so each step up — C to C+, B to B+ — is worth exactly one point.
  • A McMaster transcript shows the letter grade, the 12-point value and the cumulative average. Quote the 12-point figure with its scale, never on its own, or it reads as a fail to anyone expecting a 4.0.
  • For applications abroad, use the registrar’s own 12-point to 4.0 mapping below rather than dividing by three.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated at McMaster University?

McMaster multiplies each course's grade points by its credit hours, adds those up, and divides by total credit hours. What differs from the generic 4.0 scale is the point values themselves — McMaster uses A+ = 12.00, A = 11.00, A- = 10.00, B+ = 9.00, and so on.

Does McMaster give A+ grades?

Yes, and it is worth more than a straight A — A+ carries 12 grade points at McMaster against 11 for an A. The scale tops out at 12.

Is this the official McMaster GPA?

This calculator uses McMaster's published grade-point values, but your official GPA is whatever the registrar records. Repeated courses, transfer credit, pass/fail marks and withdrawals are handled by school-specific policy and are not modelled here — always confirm against your transcript.
