Kazakhstan GPA Calculator: Score to Letter Grade and GPA
Turn a course score out of 100 into the letter grade and 4-point value printed on a Kazakh transcript — using the Ministry’s own table — and see how the result reads to a university abroad.
Course score (0–100) to letter grade and points
B+ (3.33) · 85–89%
National scale from Order No. 152 of the Ministry of Education and Science. The result shows one decimal; the exact points are in the label (A- 3.67, B+ 3.33). Nazarbayev University has no FX, and KIMEP uses its own 4.33 scale.
Conversions are approximate. For official applications, use a NACES evaluator such as WES.
GPA back to a Kazakh score band

Kazakhstan’s credit-system grading scale
Appendix 2 to Order No. 152 and Appendix 1 to the Typical Rules (Order No. 595). The points are the official “digital equivalent” used to calculate GPA, not an estimate.

Conversion formulas
- Course grade: Score out of 100 → letter → points, from the table above. How term work and the final exam combine into that score is each university’s rule; a 60% term / 40% exam split is common.
- GPA: GPA = Σ(credits × points) ÷ Σ(credits) — the definition in Order No. 152, para. 2(28): a credit-weighted average of the points for your final grades.
- Credits: One Kazakh academic credit is 30 academic hours and equals one ECTS credit (Order No. 152, paras. 23–24).
One national table — and the two universities that differ
The letter, score and points are not left to each university. They are fixed in Appendix 2 to the Ministry of Education and Science’s Order No. 152 on the credit technology of education, and the Typical Rules for higher-education organisations (Order No. 595) tell universities to grade on the same table. That is why a B+ means 85–89 and 3.33 points at almost any Kazakh university, and why the transcript shows the score, the letter and the points side by side.
Two universities publish something different. Nazarbayev University keeps the same bands and points but has no FX: everything below 50 is an F. When a course is retaken, only the last attempt counts toward the final CGPA. KIMEP University runs a North American scale instead. Its A+ covers 90–100 and is worth 4.33, A is 85–89, A− is 80–84, and D− (50–52) is the lowest pass. So an 85 at KIMEP is an A (4.0) where the national table makes it a B+ (3.33). If your transcript comes from either university, read it with that university’s own key rather than the converter above.
FX, F, resits and the honours diploma
Kazakhstan splits a fail in two. An FX (25–49) means you came close: you may resit the final exam once, on the date in your university’s academic calendar, without taking the course again. An F (0–24) means enrolling in the course again, attending it, doing all the coursework and then sitting the exam. FX carries 0.5 points on the official table, so on paper it is not quite a zero, but what matters in practice is the resit it allows. The national rules do not say whether the resit is paid or how the first attempt is treated in your GPA; your university’s academic policy does.
Universities may also run a summer semester of at least six weeks (not in the final year), and the rules list raising your GPA among its purposes. The diploma supplement then shows your latest grade for each course.
The honours diploma (диплом с отличием, the “red diploma”) has a hard bar. You need a GPA of 3.5 or above and a course grade of C+ or better in every subject, so a single C, C−, D+ or D rules it out. You also need an A or A− in the final attestation, and no resits or repeated exams at any point. That last condition is the one students miss: fixing an FX can still leave you with a high GPA, but not with honours.
Working out your GPA, and using it abroad
A worked example with three courses:
- 5 credits at 92: A−, 3.67 points
- 5 credits at 78: B−, 2.67 points
- 3 credits at 96: A, 4.0 points
(5 × 3.67 + 5 × 2.67 + 3 × 4.0) ÷ 13 = 43.70 ÷ 13 = 3.36. To average a whole transcript, choose the 4.00 scale in the CGPA calculator; it uses the same points as the Kazakh table (A− 3.67, B+ 3.33). It has no FX option. If an FX still stands on your record, enter it as F and remember that the official GPA is slightly higher.
Abroad, the useful fact is that the points already match the plus/minus values US colleges use, so the GPA on a Kazakh transcript reads almost directly as a US GPA. The percentages do not match. The College Board-style chart most US converters use starts a B at 83 and fails anything under 60. On the Kazakh table an 82 is a B (3.0), where that chart says B− (2.7); a 70 is a C+ (2.33), not a C− (1.7); and a 55 is a pass (D+), not an F. Quote the letter grades and GPA your transcript prints, not your raw scores run through a US converter. FX has no US equivalent, so a credential evaluator such as WES decides how to count it. For Europe, one Kazakh academic credit is defined as one ECTS credit, so credit totals carry across unchanged.
Where these figures come from
- Ministry of Education and Science, Order No. 152 of 20 April 2011 — Rules for organising the educational process under credit technology (Appendix 2: letter, score and points; para. 36: FX and F)
- Ministry of Education and Science, Order No. 595 of 30 October 2018 — Typical Rules for higher-education organisations (Appendix 1: the same scale; para. 42: resits; para. 50: honours diploma)
- Nazarbayev University — Academic Policies and Procedures for Undergraduate Programs (approved 5 March 2026), Table 1
- KIMEP University — grading system and percentage conversion
Both ministerial orders were read in their consolidated text on the official Adilet legal database: Order No. 152 as amended to 26 March 2025, the Typical Rules as amended to 17 August 2026. They fix the table, the FX and F rules and the honours conditions. They leave three things to each university’s academic policy: how term work and the exam are weighted, whether an FX resit is paid, and how a first attempt counts in GPA. Nazarbayev University’s 2026 policy carries the same table as its 2020 one. No credential evaluator publishes an open Kazakhstan table, so the US reading on this page compares point values and percentages; it is not an evaluator’s result.
Conversions are approximate by nature. For official admissions, use a NACES credential evaluator such as WES and confirm with your institution.
Kazakhstan conversion FAQ
What GPA is 90 in Kazakhstan?
A score of 90 is an A−, worth 3.67 points. The A− band runs from 90 to 94; you need 95 or more for a full A (4.0).
What is a 3.0 GPA in percentage in Kazakhstan?
A 3.0 is a B, which covers scores of 80–84. As a cumulative GPA it means your courses average out to about a B, not that every score fell in that band.
Is FX a fail?
Yes. FX (25–49) is “unsatisfactory”, but it lets you resit the final exam once without repeating the course, and it carries 0.5 points on the official table. An F (0–24) means enrolling in the course again.
What GPA do I need for a red diploma?
At least 3.5, with every course graded A, A−, B+, B, B− or C+, an A or A− in the final attestation, and no resits or repeated exams at any point in your studies.
Is a Kazakh GPA the same as a US GPA?
Nearly. The points for each letter match the US plus/minus scale (A 4.0, A− 3.67, B+ 3.33, B 3.0), so the GPA on your transcript reads almost directly. The percentages behind each letter differ, so work from your letter grades rather than your raw scores, and expect an evaluator such as WES to recalculate from the transcript.
My school certificate has 5s and 4s — does this scale apply?
No. Schools use a 5-point scale under separate rules (Order No. 125): 85–100% is a “5”, 65–84% a “4”, 40–64% a “3” and below 40% a “2”. A school “5” starts at 85%, ten points below a university A. This page covers university grades only.
